Made from walnut and curly maple. The top is suspended by steel dowels. All joints are sliding dovetails. This is the table that was featured in the End Table series at TheWoodWhisperer.com. Finish is a simple wiping varnish.

Nice piece Marc – I just watched your video on it a couple of days ago. I sure wish I had your eye for design – and while I’m wishing, I wouldn’t mind some of your abilities either. You do good work and I appreciate the videos, I’ve learned a lot from watching them.

very unique table. I really enjoyed watching the videos of this as it came together. Personally, I dont much like how you’ve joined the table top to the legs, having the legs “outside” the table top just doesn’t look right to me, but like you say in the videos, this is the kind of thing that you’re either going to love or hate.. Apart from that, great table.

Hi Marc,
When this first came up I was focusing on the piece and I thought someone had copied your work. I enjoyed seeing the design/construction process. It is different and unique. But isn’t the furniture arrangement going to look out of balance with just one? How about building another one to restore harmony to the room.
Thanks not only for this post but also for what you are doing for the hobby/profession as well. It is appreciated.

Like the steel dowels that you put in there. It is good to see this assembly method.

Really Nice design and choice of materials…
What kind of walnut is that?? Where did you get it??? It’s got more red in it than most I’ve seen. I LOVE THE LOOK OF IT!!!

Pretty nice. I like the inlays at the tops of the legs. I assume that’s to hide the slots for the pins?

I enjoyed the step-by-step progress you gave your viewers as well, Mark. The process really gives me some inspiration about what is possible. I can easily see how one goes from glued up legs and a template to even what Damian pointed out from Todd Ouwehand. Maybe you should put together a compendium DVD of your tips and projects…

That is one nice table, but I have to ask if you had any dental work done prior to designing it. The legs look like the root of a tooth lol.

I enjoyed watching the series of this table being built. The final product is beautiful. I like how you made the grain of the walnut and the maple really pop out. The only thing that would make it look even better is if there were a glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks sitting on top (on a coaster of course).

I’ll echo everyone else by saying, wow. I love than there is hardly a sharp edge to be found. Everything seems to flow which gives it a “touch me” look. First look reminded me of a Maloof rocker in that way, so I can’t say that you’re on the wrong track! I’ll have to watch the whole series now that it’s all posted.

You know, this REALLY looks better in the photos than it does on a tine 1X2 iPod screen. For some reason. Seriously, the more I look at it in the pictures, the more intrigued I am by the… composition I guess would be the best word.
I think you should have just told us that you were planning those inlays all along. I’d have believed you!
Thanks, Marc. Another home run!

Thanks everyone. I truly appreciate the kind words. This was a scary one but I am pretty pleased with the final result. But most importantly, we now have a place to put the remotes and an occasional drink (with a coaster of course!). :)

Its interesting how similar the design is to the one by Todd Ouwehand. I sketched up a coat rack and 2 months later I saw a photo of the EXACT same design on the cover of one of the wood magazines. While I was sketching up mine someone else was building the exact same thing yet we were both creating from our own design. I wonder how close the build dates are for Marc and Todd’s projects. Strange how that happens, even though their designs are substantially different, two people with no connection having the same inspiration.

I thought that was pretty weird too. My inspiration actually came out of an old design I saw in a very early Fine Woodworking Design Book. The table had a glass top that overhung the legs.
To make the coincidence even weirder, Todd’s choice to inset the top into the legs is EXACTLY the way I was originally going to do it. Then I decided to suspend the top with the dowels. That would have been totally freaky if I went the other way.
