There are, as at January 9th 2012, 774 projects labelled with ‘cutting board’ on Lumberjocks. I thought I ought to see what the attraction is, so 2012 saw me in the ‘shop knocking some out. For me, the joy of seeing the pattern come to life when I slapped on the mineral oil (Liquid Paraffin in the UK) was worth the time spent in making the boards.
A friend (thanks Louise!) had given me some enormous bags of ‘short ends’ from a factory that makes luxury kitchens. She had been given them to burn! They were mostly oak, but there were also some boards of cherry, sycamore, walnut and, possibly, tulipwood (Liriodendron tulipifera). They were nearly all accurately dimensioned to 3/4” thickness and were all between 8” and 24” long. So, a good start to this little project.
These cutting boards are pretty standard, but a delight to see and will impress eventual recipients as gifts. My thicknessing sander really came in useful for these…

Wow! I like these boards. The grain and pattern with the contrast really make these cutting boards standout.
