As a follow-up on my last project post here is another music related project.
My daughter sent me a photograph of a cello stand she found for sale on the net. Can you build one of these??
I had some 5/4 oak reclaimed from some large shipping crates, so here goes.
I glued up three layers to make the upright and then taper cut the resulting piece to an obelisk. This was done primarily on my table saw. The remaining pieces were laid out to fit the cello.
The tilt of the upright is adjustable. The slotted block on the top of the rear leg controls the rearward tilt. Forward tilt is not possible beyond the front leg support and a ramp inside the upright.

Looks pretty good. What kind of material did you use for the padding.

Hi Jerry,
I can see that you just couldn’t resist the challenge. Good for you. This is an excellent piece.
Thanks for the post.

Nice job – I bet those were a couple hundred dollars on the web, your daughter should be very happy with her Dad’s craftsmanship.

Greetins Jerry: Great-looking music stand. This sorta looks like a guitar stand I did a while back. They say great minds run in pairs. Your daughter will be happy with it. Great form and function.
