Gift For The Best Man

This is the gift I gave my best man in June. He has been a dear friend for nearly 30 years. My wife found the quotation to go on the top (we are both college professors so the nerdiness of a quotation from Cicero is appropriate). The nice part was I told my bride to be I was making this box for him but she didn’t know I was also making one for her (see my earlier post) and so I was able to get feedback from her on what she liked in boxes without letting on to her wedding gift.

The box is Mahogany with a Sycamore lid. Like the previous post the corners are mitered with a Red Heart spline for strength (the Red Heart is from scraps from the box I made for my bride), the bottom inside is flocked, the lift tab on the lid is a piece of scrap Red Heart from the box I made for my Bride as well, the lid hinges on a brass rod with acorn brass nuts threaded on, and the lid was made with a CNC engraver. I finished it with a linseed oil.

He loves it.

Very nice Todd! It’s a present I’m sure he will cherish as much as he does for your friendship.

What kind of CNC do you have?

Very nice looking box. Nice clean lines and I really like the way you finished the lift tab. I would be honored to receive something like this. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for your kind words. Jim I have a HS1 Romaxx CNC. It comes standard with a particle board top. I upgrades to an aluminum top and don’t know why they even sell it without one. They have very poor customer support (by that I mean none, no training, no manuals that I remember, no real help at all). But there are lots of online videos and tutorials that accompany the software to get you going. Unfortunately it is not a shop toy you can pull out of the box and start using effectively the first day unless you have experience. But the time you spend figuring it out is well worth it. I am just finishing engraving nearly 200 wooden awards for a couple of tournaments I help host and it has worked like a charm.
