A square plaything

The mobile elements of the square are composed of only two kinds of triangle. They are equal in number with a total number of thirty-two. The triangles are made of plywood painted gold on one side and blue on the other and they are disposed in a black painted tray made of a ply base in a 1.5 cm square wood frame. The internal measurements if the tray here represented is 25 cm per side. The size of the triangles are irrelevant for the construction of a square, the only important constant being the equivalence in length of one of the sides of both of the triangles. The size of the tray depends on the size of the triangles.
The photos selected represent some few of the most basic patterns that can be generated within this form. The total number of patterns that can be generated in the geometric forms are beyond my power of calculation but an artist friend described it as “almost infinite”.

This is a simple and astonishing idea. I don’t know if I would want to tackle the hexagon or octagon, but the square (for me done in wood rather than paint) would give any spatial person or child a real treat in idle time. Much thanks for the post.

This is pretty cool. Although I would agree with Gene that some contratsing woods would look amazing. Great concept and thanks for sharing!
