Dovetail Sliding Lid Pencil Box

Sliding lid pencil box out of poplar. Hand cut dovetails finished with 4 coats of General Arm-R-Seal Semi Gloss. First attempt at a sliding lid box and my first evidence that I prefer a western style push saw to the japanese pull style as the dovetails with my western dovetail saw are great the one set I did with my pull saw were loose and gapped. Very disappointing.

Very nicely done. That poplar comes up nicely!

My experience also with the western versus Japanese dovetail saws. I still use Japanese for all of my rough ripping, though.

Nice work. I like the color match on the 4th shot.

You are not the only one who has trouble with pullsaws. My brain simply does not work that way despite how many people tell me how well they should work. I love my gents saw and I love that I can sharpen it myself without going totally cross-eyed.

Thank You guys for the kind words. The positive side is I’m getting faster at dovetails and boxes. I completed everything but the lid in one night after work which was a couple hours at most. The overhang looks a little exaggerated but it’s like that on both sides equally. My next box I’ll try hinges that set in with metal rods to mix it up. Then maybe a wooden hinge for fun on the next. The boxes have allowed me learn many skills so far without absorbing many resources.
