A quick bowl for secret santa

I made this bowl out of a cottonwood burl from a local tree trimming. It was a gift for my random internet secret santa from the website (it had nearly 40,000 participants this year). The turning didn’t take too long, but the sanding seemed to take forever. I always seem to get circular scratches and really slow material removal when sanding by hand… I may have to pursue some kind of bowl sanding system. The wood was pretty soft, so I did an early coat of thin poly before progressing grits. The figure was pretty neat for being cottonwood. Finished with several coats of a food-safe oil. The photos are pretty bad… I had to take them at night since I was shipping it the next morning, so the shininess doesn’t show well.

Love a good tree trimming, nice burl. What did you use for the finish? I haven’t tried anything new since using up the last of my Carver Tripp…..
