The solid ring is Cherry I did on the lathe then built the frame work and drawers out of maple and used maple burl for the drawer fronts. The handles are Ebony.
The title describes my feelings when after busting my butt to get this as close to flawless as anything I had ever done, I entered it in a jewelry box competition and didn’t even place in the top three. I was really excited about this one too. Oh well, I will get ‘em next time! My first post, Zathura is in the “Super Bowl” contest right now and the winner will be announced on Super Bowl Sunday. It would be nice to win the Super Bowl on the same day my Packers do! :)

To tell you the truth, it doesn’t quite look like a jewelry box.
That being said, if this were entered in an “Art Box” contest it should place VERY high!
Nothing’s perfect, but this challenges that saying – great job!

EyeOfTheJen – your box is beautiful! I just love the design & the quality of its execution looks spot-on. As Neil says, one wonders what it took to beat you. I look forward to seeing more of your creations.

Great creative design and excellent execution on this Jen. If I had to guess I’d say it likely lost points on utility. It is certainly a knockout in innovation, eye appeal and quality. I like the way you challenge yourself with high degree of difficulty projects. (One of my mottos is “Think there must be a harder way”.)
You will succeed. Just a matter of how soon.
Lovely project. Thanks.

Great design work, the woodgrains are beautiful and the craftsmanship is superb. Very well done. I predict you’ll have a great client base presenting such work as this; regardless of whatever contest judges opine.

beautiful project; I’ve found through my experience entering photography contests that more often than not it is something obscure that wins rather than the “best”. So try not to be too disheartened, your woodworking is stunning, whether you win or not.

Excellent piece of work. Love the creativity in this design. You should enter it again in another contest. It is worthy of it.. Thanks for sharing your work.
