About 3 years ago, my parents had a very large maple tree fall in their yard. I collected some of the tree limbs and decided to make a chess board out of it, as a gift for my dad. Check out the pictures, it took me over a year to dry, turn and hand plane the wood. After all this work, I bit the bullet and bought a thickness planer
