I really like the look of NIP and this is my first attempt at a vessel where the limbs are part of the design. I found that turning and getting the limb heart properly dry was a challenge. And, despite what looks good on the raw log, turning reveals that what appeared evenly spaced and on the same elevation isn’t what you might find. Fun anyhow and am looking for a source for additional logs at a reasonable price.

Now this is nice. You have a work of art here rather than a simple turning.

Thank you for the post.

very nice coloring on this piece. The shape looks nicely balanced as well.
it’s nice how we as woodworkers simply need to show off what’s already there!

The vase is beautiful. I don’t know if I should put this in this tread or not so forgive me if I am wrong in doing so, but I am just getting into turning and I would like to also see a pic of the log before the tuning begins.Would kinda give me an idea of what to look for in a turning piece.

Hello Steve;
—-now I’m going to use one of those words I love so much….resplendent!

This is truly a piece of ‘wood art’ and full of resplendent character….

Now if I may ask, what is the finish you are using here on the wood?
Thank you.
GODSPEED,
Frank

Here is a pix of the sister (brother?) to the one I used for the vase. Its just a log. NIP branches come out at more or less the same elevation and I believe if you could find a log where the branches are evenly spread radially and more or less even in the vertical dimension it would help to get a nicely balanced result. But, that wouldn’t be my kind of wood turning.
Norfolk Island Pine

Frank, after finishing this the first time and then finding out in a few weeks that it wasn’t really dry requiring some jam chucks and further turning, the finish is real simple. Its sanding sealer, one coat of thin mineral spirits and a fair bit of buffing using the Beal system. Frankly, it isn’t as shiney as I’d hoped but its softer than a new baby’s butt and feels good to touch.
