Cody is a soon to be 4 year old boy, who this coming spring will become my grandson. Since all boys like to find things and store them for later entertainment, I thought it fitting to make a box that should last him a lifetime. The box is made from aromatic 4/4 cedar and a Baltic Birch bottom dadoed into the sides. The sides are all made from single 9” wide cedar, and the top was my first attempt at coopering. The top was basically a trial and error as I started from the edges and worked my way to the center top. I think I ended up around 4 degrees which was close enough to get the glue to hold. The last piece I put in the center at the top after I’d already put away the table saw (small garage, huge pain to get it back out of the jigsaw puzzle arrangement of the equipment), so I used the jointer and a “guess your best angle” which turned out quite well. After the glue had dried I pinned everything with 5/16” walnut dowel, so there are no screws holding it together. Used a few rockler hinges in the back, and some latches in the front. Guess I didn’t get a picture of those attached. The last picture is a plane I quickly put together out of scrap pallet poplar using the bandsaw and the Rigid belt/spindle sander

Beautifully done. The cedar is super looking. Cody will treasure this and I venture to say, pass it down to his own offspring someday. Time well spent!
