A dear friend was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She has no risk factors and no one in her family has cancer. She works with multidisciplinary handicapped children and is a true Saint on earth. When we got the news, I wanted to do something but was at a complete loss. What can you do other than care ? I went to the shop and picked out some wood. Bloodwood and maple. I wanted to build a box for the good time memories that might bring her bright spots over the next several months of war. This is her treasure box. I carved the top handle from a scrap of african blackwood and was my first attempt at making handle from scrap. The top was from 6/4 maple and is a “hip roof” type design. She cried and keeps the box in her den by the chair she usually sits in. She has started the chemo after her surgery and we are all hopeful. This is not a “look what I did post”, just a reminder of some of the things even those of us with limited skills can do as woodworkers to brighten a dreary situation.
Please ignore my woodworking errors and thank you for listening to my rant.
Mike

Mike, I certainly don’t see any errors, you did a great job on this box! More importantly is the fact you made the box and created a bit of light in you friends otherwise dark world.

Who can say you have no skills? You have made a wonderful box for the saintly patient. This will have synergistic effect on chemotherapy. Best wishes for her recovery.

Mike,
This is a wonderful gift. This is a gift from the heart and as such it will be treasured by your friend. I can understand why she got emotional when you presented it to her. It shows what a thoughtful and sensitive person you are.
I believe that the story behind a project is at least, if not more so, as important as the project itself. Thank you for sharing the story and the project.
May God bless you and your friend.

I love it. It will mean alot to her I’ll bet. I love these kind of boxes, with huge contrast and some authentic made peices, like the handle.

Very nice post and a thoughtful gift. Have to tease you though..I don’t think there is such a thing as a scrap blackwood (or other species)....their just pieces waiting for the right person turn give them the opportunity to exhibit their full potential…

Mike your offering to your friend is absolutely beautiful and the sentiment that it represents will be an inspiration to her during her battle.
My wife and I had a similar battle in 1979 and with the help and love of family of friend we won. My wife had cancer back then and we went through the surgery, chemo and radiation treatments. It was an uphill battle, but now almost 30 years later we are still enjoying life and good health. Tell her to keep a positive attitude – that is as important as any other treatment she will receive. I will keep her in our prayers and thoughts.
