Hi Jay,

You did a good job with these cabinets. I particularly like the contrast between the maple and walnut. I have always thought that it would add a nice touch to mill my own lumber for a project. You took advantage of a wonderful opportunity.

Thanks for the post.

Jay,
I like all of the cabinets but have a question about the one with the oven in it. I am planning on doing something like that for my kitchen and wondered if you had to put in any special venting or insulation of any type because of the heat?

I thought they were hickory as soon as I looked at the photo. I’ve always been fond of that for cabinetry. Excellent work!

Grant: I can answer that. Modern ovens are sufficiently insulated so that all you have to do is make sure your cabinet is large enough for it to fit into. No special venting or insulation is needed.

thanks all.

i really enjoied making these cabinets, there was a lot of trouble with the hickory tearing out on the planer so all the show sides have sanding divits where i made the tear out go away.

as far as the oven i left a 4 inch gap between the top cabinet and the wall so the hot air could escape, however after i installed someone told me the same thing charlie said, “no special venting or insulation needed”

thanks again

Great looking cabinets. Is the worktop on the island unit that thick or have you created the illusion by using the thick banding / edge?

the top of the island is 2 inch ambrosia maple (water maple) edgebanded with 3/4 walnut.

that ambrosia thing makes it sound like it is a big deal but those trees are really a pest. the guys at the forestry service say that the best thing to do to them is remove them so i cut the larger ones and had them milled. there was so much of it that i had two logs cut into 2X8’s having no idea what i would do with it, then the wife came up with the idea for the island and they seemed to be the perfect fit.
