Pens for the Parents!

I turned these Woodcraft Wall St. II pens for my parents and my wife’s parents. The Moms received the dyed wood pens: a purple burl for my wife’s Mom and since my Mother’s favorite color is green, a green with gold and silver click pen. The Dads each got a rosewood pen and pencil set. For the sets, both parts are turned from one original blank so they match.

The dyed wood pens are finished with boiled linseed oil and CA glue, but the glue finish did not stick to the rosewood, so I just sanded them up to 12000 grit with the micro-polish sponges and applied a coat of paste wax. The photos do not do them justice—they are very shiny and look wonderful in person.

I also made veneer gift tags for everyone! I have made these many times from a stack of veneer business cards I bought from Lee Valley many years ago. I used a paper hole punch to make the tag hole and markers to do the artwork. The veneer soaks up the marker and makes a blotchy appearance, so I just went with the grain and tried to create a pointillist style of artwork. These are really quick and fun to do!

Thanks for looking!

You have done a good job on the pens.
With the veneers try to give them a coat of sander sealer first that will help stop the bleeding
