About two years ago a friend asked if I wanted a big chunk of cedar. I looked at it and thought I could re saw it and make a small project out of it. Last September my oldest son bought a house with a fireplace. They wanted a mantel to hang Christmas stockings from so the old painted mantel got a new life. After a lot of planing sanding and routing. I made the brackets out of a fir 4×4.

Dennis,
That is good looking. How is it attached to the bricks?
Have they used the fireplace with the mantel in place? I ask because we had a similar fireplace insert in a former house. We had to use a heat shield that went behind the frame, where the gold trim is. It was a simple angled piece of metal that did a great job of keeping the mantel cooler. However, I think that ours was closer to the top of the insert than this one is.

We used a mounting device made by Hang Man. It was made to hold a mirror,It was rated for 75 pounds so we used 2 just to be sure.its kind of like the french cleat idea. my son who is an electrician used some masonry mounting screws I have never seen before. we had to rout 2 pockets in the back of the mantel
