My wife and I made 2 of these for our grand daughters for Xmas. They are good for doing homework or other project while watching TV. Made from 1/4” white oak venner particle board core. Edging around the perimeter hides particle board interior. My wife wanted rounded corners which complicated it a bit. Has a stop moulding along the bottom to prevent stuff from rolling / sliding off which doesn’t show up very well in these pictures. Inset frame on bottom is just 1/2” thick pine to provide a nailer to attach cloth covering with staples. Once covered, a 1/2” wide band is wrapped around the perimeter to hide the staples. This band was attached with small brass nails. Carrying strap is very usefull.
Doesn’t need to be this fancy. On request I made one of these for my daughter out of 1/2” poplar plywood about 16 years ago and she still uses it a lot. We’ve had to recover it once. It didn’t have any edging.

Nice looking project, and quite practical. My wife wore out her first one using it with a laptop computer in just a couple years. Maybe next time I’ll try building my own, and hope it comes out this nice.

Very nicely done. I’ve experimented with a more manly (rough, poorly done) version that has legs that pinch and attach to the couch arm. Worked great! Until the 2.7 year old ripped off the legs… someday I’ll return to this project.
