Project Information

When I first started wood working, about 6 months ago, I made my first trip to the lumber yard. I bought a small piece of lace wood, padauk, and cherry. As the guy was writing up the ticket, another customer walked up and said with a demeaning tone, "wow what a wierd selection of woods, i'm sure that project will look "interesting" Being the nice guy that I am I smiled and laughed, while in my head I was thinking of hitting him right up side the head with this hunk of padauk.

I finially got around to making something with the wood. Well, the front of the plane looks like Daffy Duck's bill, and the colors are a little "out there" but I like it. I rounded the curves with my micro plane, the one made for hard cheeses, not hard wood… I'll have to invest in a rasp! The total legnth is 15" and the iron is a cheap Buck Bros. from HD. I lapped the bottom and sharpened it with a sand paper glued to a granite tile. It's a razor and takes off a paper thin shaving. The finish is a couple coats of boiled linseed oil.

Thanks for lookin', Any and all comments welcome!

Good job on the self-restraint--that guy probably deserved to be hit. ;-) What a jerk.

That looks to be an awesome plane. Well done on the construction of it. I actually like the duckbill--perhaps you can call it a duckbill platypus plane instead of the ugly duckling.

I do think I would like the plane a little better without the maple, but that's just me. My one piece of advice is to upgrade the iron. It will get sharp, but you'll have to sharpen it often. If you spend thirty bucks on a replacement iron I think you'll love this plane even more!

Also, a thicker iron might be better since you don't have a chipbreaker in there. Just a thought.

It looks pretty snazzy. You've got pics of all angles cept the bottom. You should go take it to that jerk and whap him up side the head with it now.

Brandon- I would like a better iron, I'll have to look into getting one, I just couldn't find one locally.

Rance- I didn't realize I forgot the pic of the bottom. It's up now.

You know, I was gonna add a comment about what a (CENSORED!) that guy in the lumberyard was…but then I got to thinking, "I've BEEN that guy, sometimes I still AM that guy, maybe I need to clean my finger before I go pointing at others." So, with that in mind, let me just say …dude, you've been woodworking for SIX MONTHS and you built THIS? Not that I'm envious or anything, I mean, I could build a plane, like that one, probably even better, you know, if I really WANTED to… :0)

Good job, both thumbs up!

Very nice work. Take some pictures to the lumber yard and maybe that guy will see it. Check at Ron Hock's site

http://www.hocktools.com/

and he may have a blade that will work. Or, get a piece of O-1 steel and make your own.

Nice plane. It looks more like a dutch shoe to me. Now when you say you've been working 6 months, do you mean officially, 6 month woodworking for a living, or what? I've been doing it about 40 years, mine didn't come out that nice. I looked at the rest of your projects. If you've really been woodworking for only 6 months, we'll just call it a natural talent.

thanks for sharing.

Don- Thanks for the positivity! I am a chef professionaly, woodworking is just a hobby. I built a bookcase once when I was younger with my father, but I bought my first woodworking tools about 6 months ago. I have been reading what ever I could get my hands on for the last year or two and watch any woodworking show I come across…. Thanks for your kind words, but I think my projects look better in the photos than they do in real life.

Well you probably should send me that plane so I can check it out. As for it looking better in the photo's than real life, then that means your a better photographer than me too. You've done some nice work there, keep having fun with it, and keep posting it so we can too.

The next project, blog it for us.

The arrangements/orientations of the different woods makes me wonder how it will hold with with himidity changes.

The scale is relatively small, so maybe it won't be an issue.
