Double Postal Box

A guy had these 2 postal box doors which belonged to his grandparents and parents and asked if I would make something with them. He wanted Jatoba wood, splined miters, dowels, and a secret compartment. I learned a lot building this: I didn’t charge near enough! (44 hours of time), how to dowel miters, and the value of sanding to 600 grit. Thanks to all my LJ friends who supplied advice. Finished with 4 coats well rubbed BLO. Will do Renissance wax in a few days as it gives a really nice feel. All criticisms are welcomed.

No criticisms, just an atta boy. Nice work and very pretty. I really liked the splined corners.

Hey, a two-holer. :) I can’t think of a single problem with that one Andy. Very very nice job. I worked with Jatoba on a commission once. I liked it but it sure was hard wood.

Nicely done. The splined miters complement those doors very well as do the dowels. How does the secret compartment work? Is there a magnetic catch?

Eric, no catch, box weighs a ton and just tilts back to expose the space beneath. Grizz, I really make a nice profit on my chairs. The other stuff is fun and challenging. Who wants to be a one trick pony? Thanks for all the nice comments. I was looking for someone to criticise the old fashioned finish.

I am not as good of a box maker but I do have a postal door and will use this idea for it. Great idea!

That looks awesome. I am sure who you made it for will be proud to own it.

Very cool, no critisizms here either, though his secret compartment isn’t very secret anymore is it :P

You will find that your left over Jatoba (aka Brazilian Cherry) will make good tool fences such as planer fences, very good beater blocks (I used one piece to drive on 500 steel vanity feet onto vanities once without denting it.) And very good vice grip pads. Would probably make a very good mallet to, at least one that you’d use not showcase.

Real nice and beautiful work, Andy! I love it.

The artist I built this for picked it up today. He was thrilled and gave me a limited edition print he had done as a bonus. I’ll try to take a pic of the print and post it.
