I decided to try my hands at some joinery, so I made a box to keep the spare drill bits that normally rattle about in a workshop drawer. It’s made from a scrap of leftover pine from a previous shelving project, the top and bottom are bits of fiberboard from an old IKEA cupboard. Finished with a couple of coats of poly.

The project was educational. I learned a number of things, among them

- how not to set up your router table for routing joints
- tearout and why it sucks
- why it’s not a good idea to rout into wood knots. (ouch.)
- use your glasses when you apply finish (doh).

Far from perfect, but plenty good enough for workshop use.

That came out nice.
Always good to use some shop organization to practice your skills.

And welcome to Lumberjocks.

I love wooden boxes that have been made for the workshop – especially the ones which are entirely utilitarian in nature and are well built, clean and neat, but not necessarily fancy.
