I got inspiration for the bed from a bedside table I saw about 3 years back using the same combo of timbers from Tasmania(www.lumberjocks.com/projects/16106). Its hard to get Blackheart Sassafras in Sydney so I ended up tracking down a guy from tassie named Steve who packed me what he had and sent it back in 2008 or 2009. I made the bed and unfortunately oiled it so for the last year I wanted to recoat it.
I made the fatal error assuming it had dried out so I wiped back with some mineral turps and laid down 3 horrible coats of Cabots CFP floor finish I’ve been using to coat some dining tables I made.
The end result was me stripping the beast back to bare timber and leaving it in the garage for a month till I got the energy up to re-coated it.
Finished off with Feast Watson master polish and 000 steel wool. I have gotta say I picked up that trick while messing around to find the best polish and now my Senior Wood Technology kids all polish their projects with it after they finish their projects.
The blackheart Sassafras looks like a pale straw coloured timber that has coffee spilt all over it.
