This is a 4 Panel Shoji that I made several years ago. This has double sided lattice. The panel is made of rice paper. If you need practice making lap joints and mortises, this is your project. This one is made of Cherry with an oil and varnish finish. I guess I’m lucky. The lady that commissioned this normally liked to have everything made mostly of purpleheart. Each panel is 14”w x 74”h.

Very nice project. I don’t believe that you can go wrong with cherry. Nice finish as well.

Very nice. How is the rice paper mounted?

-- Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember it didn't work for the rabbit.

I think I got the paper from one of the Lee Valley seasonal Christmas catalogs. It’s listed as Shoji paper. www.eshoji.com also has a large variety of papers. The paper usually comes with a rice paste that can be used to glue it to the lattice. I used white glue on mine. After the glue dries, you can mist the paper with water, then use a blow dryer to dry it and it will tighten up the paper.

Nice – but WAY too much for me. It came out really nice though.

tmuli, I guess you got another guess. Usually Japan shoji produced from the ‘paper mulberry’ and they use rice glue for gluing.
And also I use traditional Korean papaer named ‘Hanji’. It is almost same with shoji frorm characteristics to way to use.
