I decided to build this chest for my daughter so that when she is my age she will have a nice piece of furniture with a hand written letter from dad on the bottom of it.

It’s beautiful. Way to go, dad.

Your daughter has a toy chest that will last for generations. When I make something that I expect to stay in the family for generations, I inlet a brass plaque with the name of the person, I make it for, the occasion and date. For some things like a baby cradle, I put another plaque with my name as the maker. You can get small ingraved brass plaques from any trophy shop. Here's what one looks like on a bench I made for my Aunt's 55th wedding anniversary.
