Several years ago, there was a plan for this in a Wood magazine, which I held onto. Had an office Christmas party and so I put this together. I do not own a drill press, so making the center hole was a bit of a chore. Rather than glueing up a blank and drilling through it, instead I took four boards, cut a cove on each with a diagonal pass over the table saw. Then I mitered both edges on each of the 4 boards and glued them up. A pass through the band saw and attached the base. Finish is Danish Oil. Base is maple, column is birdseye maple.

That is a great solution to making the center hole. I have had that pattern marked in the magazine for a long time now as a someday when I get to it project, after seeing yours I think maybe I should get to it this year.

Not an original idea with me. I read it in a letter to the editor a month or two later. I did go through a lot of college geometry to get the coves to approximate the hole well.
