Oak Filing Cabinet w/ a Twist!

This is one of my newer builds. It’s an oak filing cabinet, but with a twist. The bottom drawer is set up for filing, but the top ‘drawer’ is actually a step stool. It’s designed to help keep documents (obviously) but also to give a convenient home for a step stool so it’s not always getting in the way and stubbing toes like they normally are in a house.

It was a fun build, all pretty basic but it kept my mind rolling. Hand cut dovetails on the drawer.

I love the creativity. Never would have thought to do that with a stool… until now.

Interesting idea. What would happen when someone puts stuff in the top drawer? Is there something temporary for the papers or what have you while the stool is in use? Nice joinery….love hand made dovetails. Great job and welcome to LJ’s…looks like your off to a great start.

It wouldn’t be possible to put something in the top ‘drawer’. It is open to the bottom drawer when the stool is out. Anything that someone tried to set in there would just end up falling into the bottom drawer.

Great idea and nicely built!

Reading the description I thought the stool might fold out of the front of the cabinet..could be an idea but would mean the cabinet would have to move to where the step was needed..

Have your say...
