Document Frames

Project by Nick Rowlett posted 640 days ago 291 views 1 time favorited 6 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Wow, so I knew that I had been working on these document frames for a while now, but judging by my last blog date it has been two months! I’ve basically had very little time to get out in the shop lately, but I managed to crank out these two things. I just wanted to practice my miters and getting things square, etc. So I borrowed a project from Greg Mitchell that I saw pictures of on LJ.

These are made out of soft maple and walnut, nothing too fancy…just stock that I had around. I am starting to wonder if I shouldn’t look at getting a biscuit jointer at some point. It sure seems that it would make it easier to align the miters for glue-up. When I built my miter-key sled I thought that was going to solve all my miter problems in that regard, but I end up gluing the miters together first and then cutting the keys second. I have a couple of store-bought jigs for gluing miters, but nothing keeps them from slipping all over each other trying to glue it all up square. Anybody have any tips?

Nick looking at the pictures your miters look pretty tight to me. The frames are really nice. Miters, as you know, are very difficult to get perfect. The biscuits will certainly help, but I’ve never used it for my frames. I have a shop made set of clamps that I have had really good results with. I’ll try to post some pictures of it in the next few days.

Great looking frames. I know what you mean about miters being a pain during glue up. I found I was able to solve the problem by using a Vario Band Clamp by Bessey. The strap pulls all four sides in together at once and allows you to make tiny adjustment before the glue sets.

These are nice looking frames. The walnut and maple are a nice combination. The walnut keys add a really nice detail. Like Mathew, I generally use band clamps when I am putting frames together.
