to get the hole drilled straight at the correct angle i laid out the profile of the handle and then drew out a square around it perpendicular to the hole, cut out the square, drilled the hole, then cut out the profile of the handle.

I made handles the same way. Lay out a block, drill the counterbore, drill the hole, then cut it out per the outline.
