I turned some old ugly poplar into somehting I think is quite nice. Finished with just a natural stain.

“Ugly” is very subjective. I have actually seen people selling poplar like this (with mineral stains) on ebay for really high prices. I think this is a great usage for this poplar. The one worry that I would have is if the poplar can stand up to the beating that a step stool might take. I built a fairly similar one out of cherry.
