This week I had to lay some decking in a remote location. I knew there would be a lot of repetitive cuts, so I decided to knock up a quick portable station for my chop saw. I only have a small van, so 8’ was the maximum legnth I could accommodate.I also wanted it to be lightweight.

I bought a sheet of 0.5” shuttering ply. The base is 2’ wide. Two cleats were screwed to the underside and are used to locate into 2 cheap workmates. A bridge and platform was constructed on the top. 4 cleats were added to locate the saw. I did not bother with a fence, because this is just for rough site work. Anyway, around here at least, I have yet to see a length of decking that is true. A clamp and block will serve as a stop.

It sets up in 2 minutes and worked great. Well worth the £10 for materials and less than 2 hrs that it took to build.

I set up something like that when I was building the fence for the dog run.. I didn’t get nearly as fancy though.. I just screwed 2×4 brace blocks to a 2×10 to support the cut piece and secured the chop saw to the board with fence screws. ;)

thats cool. i also have a workmate and this is just another great thing that they can be used for. it seems like uses for them are popping up all over the place.

Very innovative approach, Gareth. I have tried several approaches to this but this one looks quick and best of all cheap. I will have to keep it in mind the next time I need a set-up like this.
