These are Christmas presents for my two year old nieces. I’m sure they’ll have fun for 5 or 10 minutes banging on these. Their parents might not appreciate them too much but they live far enough away that I don’t really have to worry about it (insert evil chuckle here).

I made a prototype first to make sure they sounded OK. Found out that putting sound holes in one side leads to a significant increase in volume. These are made from poplar; sides are 3/4 inch, tops are 1/2 inch. I let the pieces spend some time in the sun to turn some green streaks brown (or brownish-green at least). Finish is Minwax Cherry stain followed up by four coats of wipe on poly and a coat of wax. The stain seemed to enhance the poplar green but then the poly made it fade away.

they make drum sticks with rubber ends, they are for drumline and should be at your local guitar center.

These are sooooo fun to make and play, Make sure you get the super balls on good cuz they will go flying off. I use a mixture of liquid nails and silicon with a really tight fit. I’m sure the nieces will love them too.

Thanks for the post, makes me want to make some more hee hee
