Wood shavings can be more than just wood scraps to be swept away.

Woodworker Neill M. puts simple messages on them…not after the shavings are made, though. His technique reverses the order, as shown in the photos. I used a Low Angle Jack, L.A. block, #4, and BU smoother and they all worked well. The key is just steady pressure and pace, plus a sharp edge, of course.

Great idea. It reminds me of years ago when I backpacked around Quebec, I was fascinated by all the bark peeling off the Birch trees. I tore off a really nice silver piece and wrote a message for my wife. She still has it (23 yrs later). Its just a shame its just written in ballpoint.
