WHO ME?

This piece became a carving mallet by accident.

I started with a piece of vine maple, from the firewood pile. It had an interesting knot that I thought would make a great whistling mouth. I began carving the mouth and worked outward. It was meant to be a stand alone piece, just another carving.

As is often the case, it began to speak to me, telling me how to finish it. The face was just so mischievous, it seemed to say “who me” like it had just done something wrong, or was sneaking up on something. I was envisioning a fish whacker, but then inspiration hit and I came up with the mallet idea. I have been wanting to do one anyway, and this would make a great handle.

A scrap piece of cherry and some glue and here he is.

That is really great. You are right it seems so right as mallet handle. However it seems too good to use. Great work!
