Project Information

This is the second shelf that Rick put up for me this week. The first one was a reclaimed piece of maple from a china cabinet or something. (no pictures)

This one is in my living room to hold some different items that have been collected over the years.

The wood is a piece of spalted maple that I found at a wood source located an hour away. I had went for a piece of ash for something else but when I saw this board I had to bring it home.

Rick cut it in half and attached it to the wall.

Pretty cool piece of wood? Do you have more from the same piece?

Nice job!

we have the other half of the board and then 2 more pieces. I'm going to put another shelf up on the other side of the room and then the 3rd piece is going to be used as a coffee table.

Nice chunk of wood, can't help but notice the wild green color you painted your wall! LOL I like it though and it shows your willing to try different ideas.

This is a very unique shelf but what else could we expect from someone as unique as you are. Debbie, this is an interesting application for the maple and it takes an artistic personality to envision a shelf residing in that piece of wood.

Well done.

Really interesting and attractive shelf, Debbie. I think it would look even better if you painted it the same shade of green as the wall. :)

Pretty cool Deb, I like that kind of unique design for things, you know what Frank call rustic wood art. I do the same thing. Find something natural that you can find a use for without to much work. Me like. mike

Chuck: I love my green. It changes colour all day long, from a soft sage green to a vibrant lime green. Before we shoved the TV in that area, the space was very "zen-like". Now, it's a green room. When my daughter moves out in the summer I'm going to paint another small room this same green and it will be my sanctuary.
(People either LOVE the green or hate it.)

Scott: thanks for the compliment. My artistic side sometimes feels trapped inside and then I'll "create" and it feels sooooo good :)

Charlie: you are evil!! Paint maple?? no no no.. I won't fall for that!! you don't paint maple and you don't paint walnut! See? I pay attention!! hahaaha

Mike: thanks Mike. I like it too-Rustic wood art. Gotta love it.

Greg: thanks. I love that edge as well, especially with the "hole" in the end of the board.
(rolling my eyes at the ash comment hahaha men!!) :)

thanks :)
I now have 2 shelves in the room… same wood (only this one has the hole in it though)

I thought it was going to look too closed in but it doesn't..

Yesterday at the woodworking show we saw a plank of spalted maple similar to the one used for my two shelves (minus the hole of course.) We also have another plank (I think I mentioned that already) that we will be using as a coffee table.
The price tag on the coffee table slab is $30.

The plank at the woodworking show (which we think is shorter in length) had a price tag of $100.

I love my shelves!!! :D

Nice Debbie - I have made shop cabinet doors from wormy and spalted maple - the stuff really pops with the right finish. Sometimes you can find tiger striped or curly patterns in this stuff for half the cost of regular figured maple. Right now my digital camera has a hernia so once its fixed i'll post photo's.
