Just got through making this for a customer, it’s made out of Spalted HackBerry, I added a hidden pullout drawer in the nose of the top drawer. Due to the yellowing of spalted wood when finishing, I tried adding a wood conditioner which seemed to help a little, I then finished it in Tung Oil and 5 coats of brush on lacquer.

Thanks for viewing.

Very nicely done. I really like the color. I’ve never used hackberry but this makes me think I should give it a shot. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Betsy and Tony, at least we now know Hackberry is good for something besides just being in the way. I got lucky this tree was in a family cemetery already doomed (rotted) and riddled with worm holes about to fall over so we cut it down some worms were still eating when I got to it, and some met their demise as my bandsaw sliced through them others I dug out. It spalted in it’s up right position.

Great looking box, Blackie. That spalted hackberry makes a fine wood project.
Looks like you live just the other side of IH35 from me- Buda maybe? I’m in Lytton Springs- we ought to get together sometime and swap band saw box notes.

Thanks Donna, I live in south Austin, Manchaca and Slaughter area, sure on the idea exchange. The family cemetery I speak of in the previous post is actually called the Austin Cemetry located in Cotton Tx which is just south of Pilot Knob, cotton lane is the location of the cemetery it’s just north of there that’s where I obtained the Hackberry at.

Well, Blackie, in Texas terms we are practically neighbors. Just set a date and I’ll muck out the shop so I won’t be too embarrassed by the mess. I always like to talk wood, and boxes, and show off my shop. Would you believe I’ve had my new Grizzly 10” drum sander for a couple of months (or has it been 3- time flies) and not even plugged it in yet. Gotta get to that soon. We have had one of our dogs mauled bad enough to need surgery and it has taken a lot of our time and efforts. Mostly to build a fence so they will be safer from our many predators out here in the wilds. Woodworking has been on the back burner for too long- time to make some sawdust.

I have several great original box designs that I am working on, I think these might become very popular, can’t wait to show them off. :)

Designing is a good part of making band saw boxes- and the more original they are, the better. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I’ve come up with a few that didn’t work well- all part of the learning experience.

Here are a couple of peek previews, two boxes unfinished, they should be done by the weekend with pull handles Tung Oil and Lacquer. Motorcycle and Texas Star

Notice the hidden drawer on the texas star bottom pic.
