Cherry Candlebox Cherry Candlebox No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

This is a traditional candlebox made from Cherry with a wenge accent handle. This box also has stopped miter splines made from walnut to keep everything together in the long run….Lid was beveled on the table saw…..

There is a sketchup of this box in my Google area (link in my profile).

The finish is one coat of Tung Oil followed by a couple thin coats of shellac then wax.

The lid cupped slightly (not enough to notice with the eye) which actually helped me out. The one I made after this one did not cup and when the box gets cold, the lid is loosey goosey…..Not sure how to overcome that one as the sides are not thick enough to install a catch…..

If anyone has ideas on how to keep the lid shut on these while at the same time prevent them from swelling shut in the heat, I’m all ears….Unless I figure out how to FORCE a board to cup slightly :)

!http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj276/FastBMW/?action=view&current=Untitled-1.jpg” target=”blank”>Dada shim(Shim & Trim)!Hey Carver, Nice box! Looks very well made and the color is very nice. Great job. If it where mine and I wanted to fit the lid tighter, I’d fit some thin veneer onto the bottom side of the lid groves of the box and delicately trim the lid edges for a perfect fit. This will give a friction fit to the lid while allowing expansion room for lateral movement.

Very nice candle box. That wenge accent grip is a nice touch.

I use rare earth magents in my bandsaw boxes. They do a good job of keeping the lids where you want them. You can get some at Rockler that are VERY strong. If you want to hide them drill your hole a bit deeper, cut a plug of matching veneer glue in place and sand.
