Presents of Christmases Past #2

Newspaper recycling bin.

Here is the prototype (I’ve put to use at home), of the bin we gave to our parents several Christmases back. This is another of the projects from my first forays into woodworking. The pieces were cut by hand, countersunk and screwed together with a corded drill – qu’elle horreur! (I’m starting to fear I’ve built more projects pre-tablesaw/mitersaw than since…)

I saw this project in a catalog, and decided I could save a few bucks making it myself – but using pre-milled trim from the BORG, might have kept the savings pretty slim – I was surprised at how many linear feet I needed for each. Working for our newspaper at the time had it’s advantages in that I knew how big it would really need to be.

In the projects I built after this one, and gave as gifts, I mitered the tops and plugged the screw holes.

My Father-in-Law uses his to collect the weekly papers for either starting fires, or recycling, the one at my parents has served (well) as a magazine rack, and toy box for their grandchildren. Ours catches the weekly circulars, and holds them until we need to start a fire.

Great job Scott. A nice job. Keeping all the papers from sliding around.

Very useful project, Scott. I can see where this would have any number of uses around the house other than holding newspapers.

Thanks for the post.
