I had a few pieces of this cherry hanging around the shop that I picked up on eBay. It has some unusual grain characteristics and a few voids, but quite attractive in my opinion. I teamed it up with some of the inlay I blogged about here recently. Finish is wipe-on poly.
One bad thing about not having a jointer is that it is quite difficult to route a channel for inlay something like 1/32 deep, and have that depth be uniform, when your stock is not perfectly flat to begin with. I guess I either need to break dow and buy a jointer, or get a good hand plane and learn how to use it.
As always, comments welcome.

Charlie,
If you can do work like this with the tools that you currently have then what more do you need? This is a gorgeous box. I love the inlay (I am going to look on Ebay after this post I guarantee you that). You did a wonderful job with it. The dovetails are crisp and I like the mirrored coves on the base and lid.
Plus I simply like cherry.
Wonderful job. What are the dimensions on the box?

Thanks guys.
Scott, dimensions are roughly 8×10 x 3 1/2.
Bob, nothing wrong with excuses (especially when the wife wants to know why you haven’t done x, y, or z yet.)

Nice looking box Charlie. I have fooled around with inlays just a little bit. Although, the inlay didn’t look like yours, it was just some strips of walnut.

Really nice Charlie. I’ll let you know when I can do something that nice with the jointer I DO HAVE :) The inlays are very cool and I’ll be giving those a try one of these days.

Very handsome box, Charlie. I like the inlay and grain, but also the cove cuts on top and bottom are really nice.

Charlie you have been turning out some really nice boxes lately. I don’t know if your woodworking or your photography skills are better, but the are both really good. I like this box – and you put some crisp looking dovetails on it. Good work neighbor.

It looks making boxes has become very popular in LJ presentations and each is unique in itself. You have made a very attractive box putting all your skill and choice of colors. I am motivated to try one but first may be without inlay. Very nice. Photographs are superb with their green background. Where can I get the information on how to do the inlay?

Thanks you, sharad.
It is actually possible to make your own inlay banding, but I prefer to buy it already made. Installation is just a matter of routing a very shallow channel the same width as the inlay band, anda little less deep than the thickness of the inlay. Then you just glue the inlay into the channel, and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
Here is a site that seems to have a lot of information: http://www.inlay.com/

Charlie, Excellent pics of an excellent box. That is beautiful. I would love to be able to make something that accurate and precise. (with the help of an Incra LS positioner, one day) I absolutely love your work. Wow!

Nothing I can say about the box hasn’t already been said, so just a lame “great work” is all I can do. I admit I had to check your home page to verify where you are that your grass is so green underneath. Say hi to the warm weather from those of us up north.

Charlie… I love the box. The figure is realy great and you did a real job.
Instead of forking over the cash for a jointer, you could sand parts flat. Occasionaly on figured wood that need flattening, I’ll use marble tile squares (cheap ones from Home Depot), spray mount 60 grit sandpaper to it and with the marble clamped to my bench, start sanding the piece by sliding it back and forth on the paper. When it is flat, I’ll go to 100, then 150, etc… untill it is as smooth as I need it. This works well on small pieces.
I hope this helps.

Good suggestion, Tom. I’ll have to give that a try.

that is a very nice box. I really like the look of the cherry and the inlay on the top. Your dovetails look great as well. I really need to take some time to work on one of these boxes myself.
