This is my first, & only carving I’ve ever done in Redwood. It was nice material for carving until I started on the wheel spokes. The wood is to brittle for fine detail, especially with the cross grain. I had to be real careful, & keep my chisels extra sharp.

Dick, I really like this one. Do I read a date in the lower right corner under your signature of ‘84 or perhaps ‘89? If either of these is correct, I would say that you really didn’t like this wood for carving.

1984, time flies doesn’t it. The wood is fine accept for it’s brittleness. It could have been that one piece though. The wood should be fine for shallow carvings.
When your on internet explorer 7 there’s a tab in the lower right corner, you can click to enlarge the page. Check it new out, but I think it’s only on ie7.

that is too cute—I especially like the detail in the road, making this a scene rather than “just a car”.

Pretty cool Dick, and you don’t see much red wood around my neck of the woods, I don’t know why. Very nice. Well going back at that darn compressor. mike

Nice – you have a great talent Dick – very nice detailing- me – I could not draw a box if I was inside of one.

Thanks everyone,
I made some box beams for our living room ceiling, the beams were 11’ long, so I had a lot of 1’ long leftovers. That’s what’s nice about carving, there’s always some scrap that is usable.
