Project Information

Here's the lamp I made a couple of months ago. It's from a dogwood tree that's in my front yard. I basically used a long auger bit and drilled a hole through the center of the log and ran the wire through. The dogwood log is roughly 19" tall and 6" in diameter. I used wood stabilizer on it while drying to minimize checking.

The lamp kit was purchased from Home Depot and the shade is from Target. It has a very rustic feel to it, and consequently my wife hated the lamp, which was fine with me because I was really on the fence about it. For her bday I built a different table lamp (soon to be posted).

Log lamp is good. I made one WAY before I got my log home and now it fits in perfectly. I split mine down the middle, routed a channel, and reglued it. I did this after seeing the prices of the auger bits at the big box stores. This was before I got infected with the bit brace bug and now have about 100 auger bits;) Nice work!

Yeah, I had to drill it from both sides with the auger bit. It's harder to line up the holes than one would think, since the log was asymmetrical.

Routing it may have been easier, I only wonder how visible the lines would be from cutting it in half.

It's always "to each there own" but I kind of like this lamp. I do think it would look nicer with some sort of a base on it…......it looks incomplete and unstable.

Thanks for your comments, Mike. I failed to mention that my inspiration for the lamp was a similar one I saw at Target. See the following image.

I really like the idea of the lamp without a base. I can't think of any type of base that would look very good with the log. Of course, though, as you say-- "to each their own."
