Client wanted a box to store a collection of human bones (morbid, but legal). Anywho, it took my small brain awhile to work out all of the angles (I have a sketchup if anyone wants it). I learned quite a bit from this project concerning non 90 degree work :)
In terms of construction, it’s made from Sapele and lightly figured Black Walnut (top panel and mitered lid keepers). It’s finshed with 2 coats of tung oil and 2 coats of shellac plus wax.
In addition, it uses splined miters that are stopped so as to make them invisible. This also helped with glue up which was tricky.

Nice job on a weird project. Why would anyone want to collect human bones – and where in the world would you obtain them? Really weird, but I guess everything has a collector.

I would like the SketchUp, too, please. That came out well. Your client sounds…, well, strange.

This certainly is a unique box. And the woods work well together. The woodworking, I am sure, was a challenge and from the post, it looks like you did well. I like the use of the stopped splined miters. This is an element that is not used often in furniture construction.
Thanks for the post.

Here is a link to the Sketchup, please read the note as the sizing was redesigned during build and I only updated the lower half.
There are also some other models in this collection for your perusal…..

Oh, as for the bones, I hear that they are purchased in Manhattan from a importer. Apparently, the bones come from old digs in China. Not my cup of tea, but it was fun building the box.
