This has GOT to be one of my most attractive cuttings I have ever finished!

It is a commissioned piece, but all the customer requested was a “Redskins Plaque around 12×16 at a minimum”

I bounced a few ideas off of him and this is what we wound up with.

The wood, as you can see in picture six, was taken from a gigantic Oriental Cherry tree my father harvested and saved for me quite a few months ago. The tree was taken down in one of his neighbor’s houses and he offered to take the wood off of her hands.

I took one of the smallest logs and ran it through my band saw and got around a dozen slabs over 18 inches long and around a foot high. The grain is fantastic!!!!

This piece has a live edge on the top and I left all of the rough cuts in place to add character to it. It’s around 1/4 of an inch thick after planing.

I can’t get over the grain of this wood – truly mesmerizing. And the best part is it will darken and get even nicer with age!

The only finish was a soak in lemon oil and backed with thick felt.

The only thing that would have made this an even more attractive piece is if I would have cut the Raven’s Logo into it! ;-)

Update on Oct 17, 2011: After the original one was shown off at the guys office, his co-worker contacted me and ordered a duplicate. I posted it as Picture 6.

Enjoy!

And I was going to say the only thing that would make it better was to make a ‘Bears’ logo! LOL

Seriously, this is just beautiful. The grain is nice even in the photo – I can imagine how pretty it is in person. Your work is always so nice, Bob. It is always a treat to see. Another great project!

Nice one Bob. You keep up the good work and we will soon see “pro” beside your name.

I think it would look even better with an EAGLE head on it. lol
It turned out great and I thought that you wood burned the logo on there or that it was a decal until I saw picture 5. Very nice detailed work. And I love the grain too.

Very nice Bob, I love the grain and you did a nice job keeping the lines on the fonts straight.
It makes all the difference in the world. You can be very proud of that one. Now sell it. =)

Thanks to all for the good words!

Lone tree, this piece was sold before the first cut – it was done on commision. This was the ONLY way I was going to cut a Redskins logo! ;-)

Very nice looking job! Is the logo done with CNC, wood burning, or?

Ron,

As the title suggests, this was done freehand on a scrollsaw. Take a look at picture five and you can see the cuts.

I take take as a compliment if people think my work is from a CNC. :-)

Well Bob, I thought it looked pretty darn near perfect, even on a second look. Must confess though I was so captivated by the NFL logo I missed the ‘scrollwork’. )-: Bad habit of mine when it comes to the NFL stuff. Thanks for the reply -

Beautiful cutting Bob…nice to see some Redskin swag here in Central MD. I’m surrounded by Ravens fans here in Ellicott City. I like them too, but I’m a Skins fan at heart. I’ll be doing some kind of Redskin piece in the near future for one of my boys along with the UMD Terp and James Madison Duke for both of them.
