This has GOT to be one of my most attractive cuttings I have ever finished!
It is a commissioned piece, but all the customer requested was a “Redskins Plaque around 12×16 at a minimum”
I bounced a few ideas off of him and this is what we wound up with.
The wood, as you can see in picture six, was taken from a gigantic Oriental Cherry tree my father harvested and saved for me quite a few months ago. The tree was taken down in one of his neighbor’s houses and he offered to take the wood off of her hands.
I took one of the smallest logs and ran it through my band saw and got around a dozen slabs over 18 inches long and around a foot high. The grain is fantastic!!!!
This piece has a live edge on the top and I left all of the rough cuts in place to add character to it. It’s around 1/4 of an inch thick after planing.
I can’t get over the grain of this wood – truly mesmerizing. And the best part is it will darken and get even nicer with age!
The only finish was a soak in lemon oil and backed with thick felt.
The only thing that would have made this an even more attractive piece is if I would have cut the Raven’s Logo into it! ;-)
Update on Oct 17, 2011: After the original one was shown off at the guys office, his co-worker contacted me and ordered a duplicate. I posted it as Picture 6.
