My Dad has done so much for so many people. And to honor him I built this medication box so he can keep all of his meds in one place. He is my hero. I worked real hard to make the best box of my life. (I’m still learning, mostly the hard way) I’ve been obsessed with this project, mainly because it was to honor his sacrifices he’s made to his country during the worst war this country has ever had. (Viet Nam / Agent Orange exposure) now he’s fighting cancer because of it. So if he’s got to be medicated at least he has a fantastic box to hold what he needs to help him on a daily basis. He has quietly fought this battle with the help of my fantastic mom, whom I built “Ashley’s Dresser” for. This I do for him that has done so much for me. I love him . Thanks Dad.
Brett.

To add a few comments here (I don’t know how to set up a blog yet) 1. the lid is a tray to put his pills on, when fully opened. 2. the tray/ boxes sit on top of oak risers and lift out for access to storage below. 3. the construction is oak and aspen box jointed(finger joints) with aspen tray boxes and oak risers. The lid is clear pine with a carved out area for pills to be gathered. 4. I wish I was better at mortice hinges, so I mounted them flush with the lid and back of the box. 5. the bottom is oak ply that is mounted in grooves. 6. I put brass hinges and knob to accent the light color of the wood. The handles are pine cut offs from the lid that I routed with a cove bit and mounted with epoxy and steel screws. 7 the finish is clear polycrylic (low odor) since meds will be stored in it. and finally the applicate is a wreath emblem that felt symbolized the meaning of the box. I hope this box is up to Lumberjocks standards since so many excellent boxes are showcased here. I am learning so much from the many posts that you great people share, and I want to thank you for your inspiration and kind comments. I am proud to post this box because of My Dad and because of You. Thanks.

Bradford your box is outstanding and your Dad is probably as proud of it as anyone could be. I wish him the best of health. You should be proud of both your craftsmanship and your devotion to your parents – good for you. I’m willing to bet that your Dad is as proud of you as you are of him :-)).

Bradford, nice job on the box. The finger joints came out really well. I’m sure your Dad (and Mom) will appreciate it but even more importantly knowing how much their son cares.

First let me say, great job and beautiful box. Now on a personal note, my father pasted away about five years ago at the tender age of 57. Not exactly old. He was retired and one of the many things he enjoyed was working with wood. His projects, although not many, included chests and some out door furniture. All made from pine for some reason. Anyway, It occured to me a while after that I could preserve some part of him by doing something he loved. Now, since there was no way I could eat like him, and I didn’t want to smoke cigars,or paint or…...(to many hobbies to list) I figured I’d give woodworking a shot. And the rest is history, I hope my dad would be proud of what I’ve made because really, its all in his memory. I miss him, but every time I cut my hand and swear, or mess up a cut or say to myself “nothing a little filler can’t fix” I can’t help but crack a smile or laugh out loud. Thanks for the memorys dad.

MJ, thanks for your kind comments. Every little mistake I made on this box was accompanied by memories of him saying to me “that’s ok, as long as you did your best”. And that’s what I did this time, my best. I am putting together a kind of care package of music and jokes and extra little things to his liking so he’ll have more than a box, but a “CARE” package. I don’t know how much longer I am going to have him with me , so this has got to be a “Good one”.
Thanks to all who looked at this and for your words of praise, I just feel strong about sharing this with you as well as him. So THANKS!.

Thanks again for all the kind words, I printed them out and enclosed them in the box that I fedex’d to him this morning. I felt he should see how much this means to us all (woodworking) as well me. I loved making it, hated to see it go, but glad to have finished it. I’ll update you all on his response. In the mean time, on to my next project, cleaning up the shop and planning the next project. You guys are the greatest, Thanks.

Brett – God Bless your father and thank him for his service.
As proud as you are of your father; he will be as equally proud of your gift and the sentiments behind it. This gift is more important than any gift that can be bought. A purchased gift is merely an object that we think someone will need or like, but a hand crafted gift; truly something from the heart and will be cherished.
As a former Iowa National Guardsman, a son of a Marine and a nephew of members of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and a brother to a Army Reservist and now a proud father to an Army soldier. It is nice to see the appreciation and love you have for your father. Most of my uncles served in WWII, one or two in Korea. My father was discharged from the marines prior to Viet Nam. I was discharged about two years before the first gulf war.
Again God Bless and thanks for sharing.

Bradford, haven’t been on the computer much, begining to get my foot on the ground and making two good footprints after two years. Do like your box and still again, thank’s for your and Dad’s service to the great country we have. Don’t know for how long though (?) I just hope this ringing in my ears since Viet Nam that I’ve been listening to some forty some odd years wasn’t in vain. Semper Fi!!
