My telephone pole was falling down in the back yard. I asked the linesmen if they would let me keep the cedar…they estimated the pole had been there about seventy years. They were happy to let me have it. They even cut it into 4 foot lengths for me. My friend has an African mask collection so I wanted to give him something special for his birthday. I made this with a drawknife that my 97 year old grandfather gave me this summer, some chisels from a yardsale and a bit brace. Clamped it to two sawhorses and made a mess out of the driveway. I did have to send a couple of hobo spiders off to reincarnation while I was working with it. Finished it with some danish oil that I got from our hazardous materials dump…free chemicals! I also used a random orbit sander to make it a bit safer for people to touch. It is attached via a double threaded lag bolt to his magnolia tree. When you whack it it does a bobble head wobble…fun. It also holds his beer while he is mowing the lawn. I think he likes it.

Your friend likes it? I’ll bet he does.
I like it too. You write and carve and think with style.

Bravo. Excellent project. I would never have thought up the beer holder angle.

It seems a lot of my work ends up as a beer holder. I am not sure what that means :)
