Our local woodturner’s club ( Coulee Region Woodturners … ) is doing another Freedom Pens project.

The Freedom Pens Project is an all volunteer effort (I signed up to turn 5) to provide custom, hand-crafted pens to American servicemen and women overseas. Every Freedom Pen that is delivered will serve as a constant reminder to our troops that they are not alone and will have our continued support until every one of them returns home.

Our club bought the pen hardware kits, and club members donated a nice array of hardwoods for pen blanks (mine are all cherry).

Last week, several of our club members had a gluing session to drill blanks and glue and trim the brass barrels. A turning party was held the following Saturday at a club member’s home. I haven’t heard the final count (those of us that couldn’t make the ‘party’ were responsible for turning them in our own shops), but I heard one member turned 30 pens by himself.

Not only is a project like this a great way to recognize those who are protecting our freedom, turning pens is fun and it is pretty decent skill-builder for beginners like me.

Noble gesture! And some nice pens. I’m sure they will be appreciated.

I have often wondered how many pens local clubs like mine have turned in the last couple of years.

AAW has 333 local chapters, and I suspect most if not all have done Freedom Pen projects.
