Wifey wanted a screen door this summer and I promised one to her. Though it took me a bit longer than I expected (doors are huge in my tiny little shop), I’ve finally got it hung and the hardware on. Luckily, this summer hardly had any warm days (lucky?) and we would have hardly used a screen door anyway.
I’m pretty darn pleased with how this thing turned out. Made of clear vertical grain douglas fir and built with twenty-six traditional mortise and tenon joints. All were cut by hand, as were the corresponding mortises. Finished with spar urethane (3 coats). Hinges from Lee Valley and handle from Restoration hardware here in Portland.
I love working with clear douglas fir. It smells sweet and planes beautifully. I’ve plans to build a matching front door for our home, perhaps this summer.

That is a beautiful door! Made even more beautiful by your daughter (?).
Clear DF is a gorgeous wood. I agree, it works nice.

Awesome! It would go very nice on our home, but shipping would be a killer from Portland, OR, to Portland, TN, where we live. Then there’s the issue of getting you to build it…

Those are super details on the lower half of the door and it’s great that the screen goes so low that even pets (and your best pet) can easily look out. Lovely work.
