Black Cherry wood, from a tree in front of my brother’s house in Newark, New Jersey, June 2006.

Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a great wood for sculpture and is one of my favorites. This is a fairly hard wood which requires more effort to work with than Black Walnut, my favorite wood for sculpting. It yields a very attractive finish, luster and tone. One might also say that it ‘grows old gracefully’ as it darkens nicely with time if regularly exposed to sunlight.

This piece, finished in Tung Oil, was completed in March 2010.

Interesting sculpture. I have yet to try working with cherry but hope to do some work with it soon.

Nice work!
