My first hand plane

I have been wanting to make a plane now for a while. I just bought a book on the process and I stumbled across an article in the september issue of WOOD magazine. I had some scraps left over from my last two procjects, so I thought I would try to build one.

The plane is made from African mohagany and hard maple. The pin is 1/4” aluminum rod. The local hardware store was closed yesterday otherwise it would have been brass. Maybe on the next one! I used a cheap blade I found at Home Depot for about $3. I tuned it up with some whetstones to 8000 grit and it’s a razor. I still ned to make some minor adjustments to the fit but I still can get a pretty thin shaving. The finish is BLO.

Any and all comments welcome

Beautiful job! When my Wood Magazine came, I liked the design and I’ve built a few of them too. Even using the cheep blade from Home Depot. The next one I build, will have a solid bottom like yours. That’s a nice addition.
