A while back, a good friend made me a holster for my revolver so as a thank you, I made him this red oak box. This was my first try at a box so it’s not perfect, but I think it turned out alright. I had some pattern books lying around so I combined two patterns to make the cowboy and the barbed wire frame.

Now that looks great. I like it very much it reminds me of home when I was a kid.

Nice pattern. Do you use a dremel type tool to do the carving? How long does it take to finish a pattern like this?

I use a Craftsman scroll saw to cut out the pattern. (the black is a piece of masonite that I spray painted black and glued the the back of the cutout.) It usually takes 2-3 1/2 hours to cut out the portrait and sand it. Then another 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours to make the box. That is about how long it took me to make this one. The portraits still take somewhere around that long to cut out. (depending on how many cuts I have to make and how complex/simple they are.) The box it’s self would probably take less time now.
