This is the repost that was requested when I posted the anniversary ring (if you are interested, you can see the ring in my projects) that I was carving for my wife. The completed ring and the ring box that I also carved. Made out of solid red oak, I cut the top section off for the lid. Then carved out a recess into the “box” section and a slot for the ring to sit in. I then cut the lid down to leave the hinge section that you can see in the last piic, and cut the mortise section out of the box. After clamping the two pieces together, I drill a hole through the hinge section on the drill press, and sanded down a 1/4” dowel until it would fit snuggly into the hinge hole. A couple of coats of clear finish and it was ready to go. I giave it to my wife tonight and everyone was right. It went over great with her, and she was very suprised. Red Oak ?? It looks more like a Mahogany with that tight closed grain and veining pattern along with the color.
I can’t imagine carving Red Oak this nicely.
