This is my first attempt at making a box. I thought well that should be simple … HA! I now have a much greater apprecation for the box makers. This is the first time I resawed my own veneer and the first time I used the veneer press I built. The first time I used my mortise machine. My box is pretty crude compared to the great boxes on this sight. But what fun, I have to do this again. Iam going to give this box to a young man with autism he just had surgery and I hope he likes it.

Looks pretty good to me! That’s a lot of firsts.

Indeed, impressive for a first box… or any box for that matter. Great design and work. Could we see another photo? Perhaps inside?

Hey Bill;
The box looks GREAT. The young man you made it for should be very happy with it.
What a nice gift and gesture.
How did the hinge mounting work out for you.

Lee the hinge mounting worked great, but I cut the mortise in the wrong place so they are oversize but I plan on fixing them before I give it to him. Thanks again for the help with the hinge Lee.

This project discourages me, my first box is in pieces at the bottom of my cut off bin. I hope I will be able to make a box as nice as this someday. Great Job Bill! Also I really like what you plan to do with it. Good for you, I hope the young guy feels better.

Fantastic first box! I wish mine had looked anywhere near this good. Whatever didn’t turn out the way you wanted on this box will be much easier the next time around.

Don’t sell you box short – it looks very nice to me. You’ve accomplished some firsts, made a nice box and are about to make a very special young man very happy – it’s a good day.

Hey Bill, nice job on the box. I particularly like the arched legs and the way they stand proud of the box sides.

What is not to like about the box. This is a fine box for any attempt much less being your first.
Thanks for sharing.

Dang, that’s a nice first box! Boxes seem so simple, yet there is so much to be learned about woodworking in that small thing. Just the process of building one covers so many different aspects and opens you up to so many different possibilities. Great job.

Beautiful box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you please post a tutorial or at least pictures of your press? I’m starting to make one know and could use the information and how the press worked for you.
Thanks,
John
