My first real Dovetail Box

Well… My Dad is a woodworker all the way on the other side of the country and I thought I’d learn how to cut dovetails by hand so I could make him a box for his birthday. I don’t really know what he’ll use it for but it’s his now. I also bought him a cool manual chainsaw sharpener that fits perfectly inside of it. It took me a lot of practice to just get Okay at cutting those dovetails but it sure is a lot of fun. I used a wood burner to engrave the box, finished it up, and mailed that baby. I’ve been waiting for him to get it so I can finally post pictures on this site since I know he looks at my page every once in a while.

Curly maple on the outside and top and quilted maple on the inside bottom. This was also the first time I used alcohol based dye which was what I used on the top and bottom. For the sides I used water based dye. I threw some BLO and then some shellac. This was also the first time I used lacquer from a spray can… I kind of wish I just waxed the box instead of used that lacquer stuff. Oh well… I’m no pro but it was made with love. I’m sure he’ll love it. Happy Birthday Dad.
